I’ve been somewhat out of the loop in terms of new music releases. When I work, I can’t listen to anything with lyrics (I get too distracted), and when I drive I tend to listen to NPR. I tend to rely heavily on Pandora.com when I do have music on. It’s convenient. I’ve created a variety of stations that fit my taste, I select one, and then go about my business.
But over winter break, I read an article about Neil Young’s CD Living With War. I decided to check it out via the Internet, and I am astounded. It is by far one of the most politically in your face albums I know about that have been released since the 1960s. So, okay, Young is a child of the sixties, and his music appeals to my sensibilities. But regardless, the lyrics and music, and video clips are worth spending some time with. He voices the frustration I feel.
If you, like me, have been mentally elsewhere, at least take a look at the website. It’s a tremendous representation of the power of multimodalities. The page looks like a newspaper but includes audio, video, graphics, texts. It is, I believe, a great example of where publishing (of anything) can go.
