Jazz – A late life discovery

Everyday life

As a child my exposure to music was pretty limited. It was church hymns, German ethnic stuff, and the rock and roll I heard on my friends’ radios and finally on the little transitor my Uncle Diff gave me. In high school I listened to top 40 radio (FM was just coming on the scene). At college I got my first introduction into more serious rock. Finally, as an adult I began to learn how to listen to classical/instrumental music. I developed a taste for punk, reggae, and alternative in my 30s. About ten years ago or maybe more, I discovered the blues – classics like Johnny Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Now just about about a year or two ago, I’ve gotten hooked on jazz. It started with my daughter finding the local jazz station, and now it’s become one of my favorites. I don’t know much about it; I’m only now beginning to learn who the masters are. It’s kind of like wine, I don’t know what the experts say is good or why it’s good, I just know what I like, and it’s a fun journey.

So I’m listening to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk on my iPod, and I took the plunge and laid out some serious money for club passes for the upcoming Rochester Jazz International Jazz festival. I can’t imagine life ever getting boring. Every time I turn a corner, I find something new.
