I should be working on an article, but instead I’ve been living up to the name of this blog and procrastinating by trying to figure out the different functions in edublogs. I’m a teensy bit frustrated right now. This blog space contains a many more features than blogger, but it’s also much harder to use. On the plus side, as I’ve tried to figure things out, I’ve also discovered a whole new world of digital toys – like music sites. This could be really dangerous. I’m trying to contain myself.
I think that’s the difficulty with any technology. It takes a great deal of energy to learn how to use it with power. And literacy is no different. Literacy is a technology, and it does take time to learn powerful ways to use it. The better point or question is powerful for whom? If I master this blog thing, what power does it give me and in what contexts? Within the contexts of my life, is my time better spent on other technologies? Therein lies the important issue of literacy – for whom is it powerful and for what purposes?
