No Miracles

I get a little nervous when people say, “If only Obama gets elected…”  It’s not that I don’t like Obama. I do. I’m a supporter. I want to see him get elected. However, we need to keep in mind that whomever is elected next week is not a miracle worker. The situation we are currently in (nationally and globally) is not the doing of one person or one political party. Granted, certain policies put in place by an administration have heavily contributed to the situation, but what’s going on is too deep and too systemic to blame it on one person or administration or political party. And getting out of it is going to take more than one person, one administration and one political party.

To recover and to move forward, we’re going to have to take on a WWII type of mindset where we are all working together toward a common goal, where we’re willing to make sacrifices for the common good, where we’re willing to a take a hard look at the global realities, and where we’re willing to be smart and see the interconnection of things and not look for simple answers. We are dealing with climate change, food shortages, the bifurcation of wealth, war, a chaotic economic system, and so on.

Regardless of whom we elect, there are no simple answers. Obama isn’t going to be able to fix it all. Neither would McCain. Things will get better only by a collective response.
