I revisit the Pew Internet and American Life report on Youth and Writing. It was published in the spring, I believe, and I read it quickly back then, but just recently I dug into it more, and have found some things that I need to think about more and question. There is a difference between African American youth and Euro American youth about what constitutes writing. The Pew study indicated that African American youth are more apt to see online text creation as writing, and they are more likely to be writing for enjoyment than Euro American youth. Similarly, Jenkins found that minorities and urban youth are more engaged in content creation than Euro American and middle class youth. That these finding haven’t been problematized and discussed yet is amazing to me. But maybe they have and I’ve missed it. But the findings need to be interrogated and explored and considered.
I’m not sure where to go with this line of thinking yet. I need to bounce it around. I need to read and think.
