I’m reading Julia Alvarez’s book In the Time of Butterflies. I love her writing. I’ve read How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and used When Tia Lola Came to Stay in my methods class, but this book, more than any of her others is devastating. I also love Allende’s writing. And Marquez. And Borges.

Why aren’t those authors taught in our schools? If we want our youth to understand and participate in democracy, these authors are who they should be reading in order to understand what happens when there is no democracy.
