It’s been a bizarre week. I woke up Monday morning energized by ideas tha had been floating around in my brain and ready to tackle some writing and analysis. Then I received a letter from the Rank & Tenure committee at my institution informing me that my motion for promotion and tenure had been “disapproved.” Well that totally derailed me. I was hurt, angry, and bewildered by the decision. Not that I’m all that and a bag of chips, but I think I have a damn solid case for early tenure especially at my institution. So the week was spent dealing with the fall-out of that decision. Plus the news that other hits have been made within my institution (key admin positions eliminated, being asked to do “more with less” aka larger class sizes. Size my head has been spinning.
Admittedly, I have been feeling quite discouraged. But today I interviewed two phenomenal young men and was hugged by a former student. That makes it all worth while. So what’s more important, tenure or having an impact on the world. I’ll take the latter every time.
